Chirang: Tension gripped Assam’s Chirang district after police opened fire to control a violent protest at the Runikhata Forest Range Office along the India Bhutan border.

According to officials, the situation escalated when protesters allegedly attacked police and forest personnel and resorted to stone pelting. Security forces were then forced to open fire to bring the situation under control.

The firing led to panic in the area, with tension remaining high through the day.

The unrest began following the detention of an individual over alleged encroachment of reserved forest land. The incident triggered a night-long protest and gherao by local residents. The situation worsened further after a lathi charge reportedly left a young woman injured, fuelling anger among the crowd.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as efforts continue to restore normalcy in the region.
