Guwahati | Asik Ali, the 26-year-old man accused in the murder of Gauhati University student Nimisha Thakuria, was admitted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Tuesday morning with two bullet injuries to his right leg. Ali was brought to GMCH around 5.30 am and admitted to the Orthopaedics Department for treatment, doctors said.
GMCH superintendent Dr Devajit Choudhury said both injuries had entry and exit wounds. One bullet struck Ali’s knee joint from the rear and exited through the front, while the other caused an injury near the ankle joint. “The blood vessels and nerves are intact,” Choudhury said, adding that Ali was currently out of danger.
Ali was initially taken to Garol for medical treatment before being shifted to GMCH. Doctors said they found no visible injuries on other parts of his body. “We do not know under what circumstances he was brought here. We are treating him as a patient,” Choudhury said.
Ali was allegedly shot during an encounter in connection with the murder case. Further details about the circumstances leading to the shooting were not immediately available. Ali has been accused of involvement in the death of 21-year-old Nimisha Thakuria, whose body was recovered from a homestay in Guwahati on September 25.
Thakuria, a Sociology student at Gauhati University, was a resident of Dharapur under the Azara police station area. Her body was recovered from Rudra’s Kitchen Homestay late on September 25, following which police reached the spot and launched an investigation.
The circumstances surrounding her death and the events leading to Ali’s shooting are under investigation.
