“The ambitious Lamphel Water body project of the Government of Manipur has showed its adverse effect on the surroundings. A 200 feet long approached road connecting the OBC Boys Hostel of NIT Manipur and the main road was completely submerged in the night of 12th March at around 10.30 PM.

The approach road is the only motorable road connecting the hostel to the main road. The road is an essential road as this is the only road where all sick students are taken to hospital by ambulance.

Since the initiation of the water body project, the campus open spaces have been used to pump in the sludge from the water body. So far an area of around 180 acres of land has been covered with the sludge. The sludge that is being pumped inside the campus are mostly organic waste with zero load bearing capacity stated one senior faculty of the Department of Civil Engineering which has also been corroborated by the soil testing report conducted by CPWD.

The water body is going to be dug up in three phase.  In the first phase a depth of 3 m has been dug. Two more phases are to be carried out.

The institute faculty members and officials have expressed serious apprehension that if necessary corrective measures are not taken up, all constructions taken up along the water body might be submerged in due course of time.

Inspite of the catastrophic incident, the pumping of sludge in the campus continues unabated. It has been learned that a high level committee headed by the Dean P&D has recommended to the Registrar to halt the process of pumping of the sludge in an unplanned manner.

However, it is reported that no concrete steps have been taken up so far which will further compound the problem being faced by the Institute of Excellence in the state.

It is to be noted that the institute at present is run by in-charge Director and the faculty members, officials have expressed dissatisfaction on the non-appointment of a full time Director for more than 9 months now.
