The Northeast state of Manipur is witnessing a high voter turnout in the second phase of Lok Sabha elections held on Friday (April 26).

68.48 per cent voter turnout was recorded in Manipur till 3 pm, the Election Commission of India (ECI) informed.

13 assembly segments under the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha constituency went to polls in the second phase of Lok Sabha elections.

A total of 857 polling stations, including nine special polling stations, have been set up across 13 assembly segments under the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha constituency.

Currently, the Outer Manipur constituency is represented by Lorho Phoze of the Naga People’s Front (NPF), a constituent of the BJP-led NDA.

The BJP has thrown its support towards NPF candidate Kachui Timothy Zimik.

The NPF candidate will face competition from Congress MLA Alfred K Arthur, representing the joint Opposition candidate of the INDIA bloc.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh did not hold back on Twitter on April 26, sharing a video that he claimed showcased voters in Ukhrul District, Outer Manipur, being pressured to support the Naga People’s Front (NPF), BJP’s ally, instead of Congress. His tweet rang alarms about democracy’s jeopardy, urging attention to what he deemed “the most important elections of our lifetime.”

“This video is from TODAY in Ukhrul District, Outer Manipur. Voters are being forced to vote only for the NPF, the BJP’s alliance partner, rather than the Congress. The security forces are standing there mutely as our democracy is hijacked (s.i.c),” he wrote on Twitter.
