Imphal: Anguish and anger echoed through Kanglatongbi on May 16 as protests demanding the safe release of six remaining Naga civilians intensified amid growing public outrage.
The agitation entered its fourth day with women’s groups, civil society organisations and indigenous bodies joining hands against the alleged abduction of 20 Naga civilians from Leilon Vaiphei village following the May 13 ambush in Kangpokpi district.
According to protesters, some of the abducted civilians have been released, while six are still reportedly being held hostage.
Demonstrators expressed frustration over what they described as the failure of both the state and Central governments to secure the safe return of the remaining civilians. Protesters raised slogans such as “Hostages are Human, Not Weapons” and “Where is Our Government?” during the demonstration.
The protest was organised by the Koubru Range Liangmai Women’s Union at Kanglatongbi in Kangpokpi district. The incident has further heightened tensions in Manipur, where ethnic unrest and security concerns continue to affect several parts of the state.
