Imphal | Bollywood actor Randeep Hooda has appealed for peace, unity and reconciliation in Manipur during a meeting with Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh, amid ongoing efforts to restore normalcy in the conflict-affected state.
Hooda, accompanied by his wife and Manipuri actor Linthoingambi Laishram, met the chief minister at his official residence in Imphal on July 16, according to an official statement.
During the interaction, the actor congratulated Singh on assuming office at a challenging time and acknowledged the complexities of governing a state grappling with prolonged ethnic tensions and security concerns. He urged people from all communities to come together as one family and work collectively towards lasting peace and harmony.
Responding to the appeal, Chief Minister Singh said he remained optimistic that normalcy would gradually return to the state despite the continuing challenges. He noted that efforts undertaken by the government to promote dialogue and reconciliation were yielding positive results in some areas.
Highlighting recent developments in Jiribam district, Singh said initiatives aimed at rebuilding trust among communities had helped narrow longstanding divisions. According to him, people in the district had begun living together more peacefully, signalling progress in restoring social cohesion.
The chief minister reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting citizens and ensuring stability across the state. He also called on all communities and civil society groups to actively support ongoing peace-building efforts and contribute to creating an atmosphere of mutual understanding and cooperation.
The meeting concluded with the chief minister, Hooda and Laishram sharing a traditional meal of khechri as part of the Rath Yatra, locally known as the Kang festival, symbolising communal harmony and cultural celebration.
Manipur has witnessed ethnic unrest since May 2023, and the state government continues to engage with various stakeholders in an effort to rebuild trust and restore lasting peace.
