Guwahati |  Adani Defence and Aerospace Director Jeet Adani on Sunday said the proposed 3,200 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power project in Assam’s Dhubri district will become the Northeast’s largest power generation asset once operational.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the foundation stone for the Adani Power Limited project at Chapar in Dhubri district on Sunday. Addressing the ceremony, Adani said the project involves an investment of Rs 48,000 crore and would help create a new investment environment in Assam while generating employment opportunities.

“More than pride, it is a huge responsibility that we are bringing such a big project to Assam,” Adani said, adding that the group was committed to contributing to the state’s development. He said the project would provide additional power generation capacity to support industries and enable businesses to expand.

The construction phase is expected to engage thousands of workers, engineers, technicians, contractors and suppliers, while generating economic activity for businesses in the surrounding areas, Adani said. He added that the project would create employment opportunities for local youth and bring communities around the plant into the development process.

Adani also outlined the group’s other planned investments in Assam, including an Aero City near the new Guwahati airport terminal. “Then our Thermal Power Project is coming up,” he said, adding that two cement projects and a maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) project were also planned in the state.

The Chapar plant is being developed as an ultra-supercritical thermal power facility with a planned capacity of 3,200 MW. The project is expected to strengthen Assam’s power-generation capacity and support industrial development in the state and the wider Northeast.
