SRIBHUMI | Two Assam Police personnel have been arrested in Sribhumi district in connection with an alleged extortion case involving Rs 14 lakh, while a sub-inspector named in the case remains absconding.

The arrested personnel have been identified as Lance Naik Anwar Hussain and Constable Sajal Shuklabaidya. Both were posted at Patharkandi Police Station. According to police sources, the alleged incident took place on September 10 when a business associate was reportedly picked up from Patharkandi Railway Station in a police vehicle and taken to the Chandkhira area.

It is alleged that Rs 14 lakh was subsequently taken from him. During the investigation, the involvement of two police personnel, including a sub-inspector posted at Patharkandi Police Station, allegedly came to light.

Police subsequently arrested Hussain and Shuklabaidya. Searches were also conducted at the residences of the two accused personnel, during which Rs 2 lakh was reportedly recovered. The sub-inspector, identified as M. Nangthaiba Singh, remains absconding. Police have launched a search to trace and arrest him.

The alleged involvement of serving police personnel in the extortion case has raised concern in Sribhumi district, with the investigation continuing.
