Silchar: A controversy has surfaced in Assam’s Lakhipur subdivision after a welcome arch carrying the term “Dima Raji” was erected during the recent visit of Assam Cabinet Minister Kaushik Rai, reviving discussions over the long-pending proposal to include 19 villages of the region under Dima Hasao district.
Rai, who was recently sworn in for a second term in the Assam Cabinet, visited Lakhipur on June 22. Several welcome gates and arches were put up across the area to greet the minister. However, one arch installed in the Pailapool area has drawn significant attention and triggered renewed debate.

According to local sources, the arch was erected in front of the residence of Dimasa leader Nabada Johari. The structure carried the inscription: “Greetings, Nabada Johari, Pailapool, Dima Raji.”
The use of the term “Dima Raji” has reignited a sensitive and long-standing issue concerning the proposed inclusion of certain areas, including 19 villages under Lakhipur subdivision, within the jurisdiction of Dima Hasao district. The proposal has remained a contentious political and social issue for years.
Several organisations and residents have previously opposed the move, demanding that the villages continue to remain under Cachar district. The appearance of the “Dima Raji” inscription during the minister’s visit has once again brought the debate to the forefront, prompting fresh discussions across the region.
