JRD Tata, one of the stars of Indian sky, who decorated India by his passion and vision. An aviator and a prolific entrepreneur who expanded the Tata Group from 14 to 95 companies by the time he retired in 1988​. He formed Tata Aviation Services in 1932 ​and went on to establish Air-India International later incorporated as Air India in 1948 ​. ​

Some interesting facts about him.

  • He was the first person to qualify within India to fly. The first flight in the history of Indian aviation took off from Drigh Road in Karachi with JRD at the controls of a Puss Moth.
  • Tata Airlines, India’s first commercial airline, was founded by him.
  • A founding member of the first governing body of the National Council of Applied Economic Research in New Delhi.
  • He started with 14 enterprises of Tata group which had grown up to be a conglomerate of 95 enterprises.
  • The Maharashtra government named its first double-decker bridge the Bharatratna JRD Tata Overbridge at Kasarwadi Phata, Pune.
  • The government of India honoured him with India’s highest civilian award the Bharat Ratna in 1992.
  • JRD Tata was also bestowed with the United Nations Population Award.
