Guwahati: Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar met Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at Lok Sewa Bhawan on Saturday and proposed organising an international marathon in Guwahati on the lines of the renowned Tokyo Marathon.
Sharing the development on social media platform X, the Chief Minister said the Assam government would be happy to host the event and would examine the proposal.

“Shri Sunil Gavaskar ji met me and proposed to organise an International Marathon in Guwahati on lines of the Tokyo Marathon ’25. We will be glad to host it and will definitely examine it,” Sarma posted.
Recalling his admiration for the cricketing icon, the Chief Minister said, “Like many of my generation, I also shared with him my childhood memories of those SUNNY knocks.”
According to the Assam Chief Minister’s Office, the meeting also focused on strengthening Assam’s cricketing ecosystem and exploring ways to further promote the sport in the state.
The proposed international marathon, if approved, is expected to enhance Guwahati’s profile as a sporting destination while encouraging fitness, tourism, and greater participation in athletics.
