GUWAHATI: Assam down town University celebrated National Unity Day 2026 with patriotic fervour, marking the 151st birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, popularly known as the Iron Man of India on October 31.

The programme was jointly organised by the Faculty of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation (FPAR) and the AdtU Dance Club. It highlighted the importance of national integration, cultural diversity and collective harmony.

The celebration began with a Run for Unity on the university campus, in which students, faculty members and staff from different states and communities participated. The event symbolised togetherness and solidarity among people from diverse backgrounds. Prof. (Dr.) Robin Gogoi, Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, delivered an address on national unity, integrity and the role of young people in strengthening the country’s social and cultural foundations.

Drawing a comparison between Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Chaolung Sukapha, the founder of the Ahom kingdom, Prof. Gogoi said Patel united around 560 princely states after British rule, while Sukapha brought together local communities and the sons of the soil to establish his kingdom and shape a greater Assamese society.

The programme also featured a multi-state diversity dance performance, in which students showcased India’s rich cultural heritage through traditional dance forms, music and artistic expressions. A cultural ramp walk followed, with participants representing the traditional attire, ethnic identities and customs of different Indian states. The presentation highlighted the country’s cultural diversity and reinforced the message of unity.

The celebration concluded with the administration of the National Unity Day Pledge, with participants reaffirming their commitment to protecting the unity, integrity and security of the nation. Delivering the vote of thanks, Dr Shalaka Baidya (PT), Assistant Professor, Faculty of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation and Convenor of the AdtU Dance Club, thanked the university administration, dignitaries, faculty members, organising teams and students for their support and participation.

The celebration served as a reminder that India’s strength lies in its diversity and that mutual respect, cultural understanding and national solidarity are essential for building a united and harmonious society.
