Silchar: Health authorities in Assam’s Barak Valley are facing growing concern after 148 infant deaths were reported across the region’s three districts over the past three months, raising questions about neonatal healthcare and maternal health services.

According to official figures, the deaths were recorded in Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi districts between April and June. The figures have prompted the health department to review the causes of the deaths and assess the quality of care being provided to newborns and expectant mothers.

Officials said several factors, including premature births, low birth weight, birth complications, congenital disorders, and infections, are among the leading causes of infant mortality. They added that detailed investigations are being carried out to identify gaps in healthcare delivery and strengthen neonatal care services.

The health department has directed hospitals and healthcare centres to intensify monitoring of high-risk pregnancies, improve neonatal care, and enhance awareness among expectant mothers about regular antenatal check-ups and institutional deliveries.

Authorities have also stressed the need for coordinated efforts between healthcare workers, hospitals, and local communities to reduce preventable infant deaths and improve maternal and child health outcomes in the Barak Valley.
