Silchar: In a major decision aimed at accelerating long-delayed road infrastructure works in Silchar, the Assam government has decided to transfer the reconstruction of the Capital Point to Rongirkhari road from the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) to the state Public Works Department (PWD).

The decision was taken during a high-level review meeting held on Thursday at the conference hall of the Cachar Deputy Commissioner’s office. The meeting was chaired by Assam Minister for Public Health Engineering, Barak Valley Development and Hill Areas Development, Krishnendu Paul, and Minister for Food, Public Distribution, Housing and Urban Affairs, Consumer Affairs and Cooperation, Kaushik Rai.

Senior officials from the district administration, NHIDCL, PWD, the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department, Silchar Municipal Corporation and other concerned departments attended the meeting to review the progress of key infrastructure projects in the district.

Addressing reporters after the meeting, Minister Krishnendu Paul said the decision to transfer the project to the PWD was taken on the directions of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to ensure that the reconstruction is completed in accordance with government standards and without further delay.

The Capital Point to Rongirkhari stretch is one of Silchar’s busiest roads and has remained in poor condition for a prolonged period, causing inconvenience to commuters and local residents. The transfer of the project to the PWD is expected to help expedite the reconstruction work and improve connectivity in the town.

The ministers also reviewed the status of other ongoing infrastructure projects and directed the concerned departments to ensure timely execution and maintain quality standards in all development works.
