Silchar: Rajya Sabha MP on Thursday urged the Central Government to establish a Multi Modal Logistics Park (MMLP) in Assam’s Barak Valley, raising the issue during the Zero Hour proceedings in Parliament.

Highlighting the strategic importance of the region, Purkayastha said Barak Valley has immense potential to emerge as a major logistics and trade hub for Northeast India. He appealed to the Centre to accord priority to the proposed project, stating that it would play a crucial role in strengthening the region’s economic infrastructure.

The MP said the proposed Multi Modal Logistics Park would enhance road, rail and other modes of transport connectivity, leading to a more efficient movement of goods across the region. He added that improved logistics infrastructure would reduce transportation costs, attract investments, generate employment opportunities, and encourage industrial growth.

Purkayastha further emphasized that the project would accelerate the overall economic development of Barak Valley and improve its connectivity with the rest of the country, making it a key gateway for trade and commerce in the Northeast. The demand comes amid ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and promote economic growth across the northeastern region.
