Silchar: The Silchar District Congress Committee observed the 84th anniversary of the Quit India Movement on Sunday with a programme highlighting the sacrifices and contributions of India’s freedom fighters.

The programme began with the hoisting of the Congress party flag by District Congress Vice-President and programme in-charge Sujan Dutta. The initiative was organised by the District Congress Sevadal.

This was followed by floral tributes to a portrait of Mahatma Gandhi, one of the leading figures of the Quit India Movement launched in 1942. Congress leaders and workers, including Simanta Bhattacharjee, Sanjeev Roy, Amit Chakraborty, Bandita Trivedi Roy, Debodeep Dutta, Abdul Rajjak, Ashok Baidya, Amrul Haque, Anup Roy, Salim Uddin, Sonali Das, Masum Mazumder, Ahmed Ali Laskar and Haran Sharma, paid their respects.

Members of the Youth Congress, Mahila Congress, NSUI and various cells and departments of the District Congress Committee also attended the programme.

A seminar titled “Fighters Who Fought for Freedom” was organised to mark the occasion and recall the history of India’s freedom movement. The seminar was presided over by Sujan Dutta.

Speakers at the seminar highlighted the courage, sacrifice and patriotic spirit of the freedom fighters under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. They recalled Gandhi’s call of “Do or Die”, which became a powerful slogan during the Quit India Movement and inspired people across the country to join the struggle for independence.

The programme concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.
