ITANAGAR: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has called for consensus on the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP) and invited organisations opposing the mega dam for talks following a violent confrontation between protesters and security personnel during a 12-hour bandh on October 23.

The bandh was observed across the Siang belt as organisations and local groups protested against the proposed project. The demonstration witnessed a clash between protesters and security personnel, raising concerns over the situation in the region.

Responding to the developments, Khandu stressed the need for dialogue and mutual understanding to address the concerns of the people opposing the project. He invited the protesting organisations to hold discussions with the state government to resolve their differences through peaceful and democratic means.

The Chief Minister maintained that building consensus among local communities and other stakeholders was important before moving forward with the proposed project. He also called for peace and urged all concerned to avoid violence.

The SUMP has faced opposition from several organisations and sections of the local population, who have raised concerns over its possible impact on the region and its people.
