State records 1,363 electric vehicle registrations till October 27; Imphal emerges as the main charging infrastructure hub, but EV adoption remains below national average
KRC TIMES Manipur Bureau
IMPHAL: Manipur is witnessing a sharp rise in electric vehicle adoption, with registrations increasing by 70 per cent year-on-year during the first nine months of 2026, reflecting growing interest in cleaner and more economical transport options. The state recorded 1,363 electric vehicle registrations between January and October 27, 2026. During the January-September period, registrations stood at 1,251, compared with 737 during the corresponding period in 2025.
Three-wheelers, including passenger autos and goods carriers, accounted for the largest share of the state’s electric vehicle market, making up 43 per cent of total registrations through September.Two-wheelers followed with a 36 per cent share, indicating that smaller electric vehicles are driving much of the transition towards electric mobility in the state.
Despite the substantial growth, Manipur continues to lag behind the national average in EV penetration. Electric vehicles accounted for just 4.6 per cent of new vehicle registrations in the state, against the national average of 10.7 per cent. In terms of total electric vehicle registrations, Manipur ranked 27th among 36 states and Union Territories. It stood 25th among the 28 states in EV market share.
The expansion of charging infrastructure is expected to play a crucial role in sustaining the growth. At present, charging facilities are concentrated largely in major urban centres, with Imphal emerging as the principal hub. The state capital has around 13 public and semi-public charging stations. Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) has installed multiple e-Charge facilities equipped with 60 kW CCS2 fast DC chargers at strategic locations, including areas near JNIMS Porompat, Manipur University, Lamshang and Malom.
An additional charging facility has also been established in the parking area of Imphal International Airport to cater to commuters.
While the 70 per cent growth in registrations signals increasing acceptance of electric mobility, the relatively low market share highlights the challenges ahead. Expanding charging facilities beyond Imphal, improving accessibility and encouraging wider adoption across different vehicle categories will be important for Manipur to narrow the gap with the national EV transition.
