Peeved over lack of concern shown by the state government, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the mysterious death of a girl student at a boarding school in Imphal declared a 24-hour state wide shutdown strike to pressurize the government to deliver justice in the case. The shutdown strike will be effective from  July 24 morning.

13 year old Ningthoujam Babysana Chanu, daughter of N. Tomchou Singh of Thangmeiband Maisnam Leikai, Imphal West was found dead hanging inside the hostel of Standard Roberth Higher Secondary School, Canchipur on July 18 morning under suspicion matter. One of Manipur’s influential student body, All Manipur Students Union, are actively supporting the demand for justice into the student’s death.

Local residents of deceased student, Thangmeiband of Imphal east blocked all streets and roads passing through the locality and other adjoining roads bringing all vehicular traffic to a halt. Protestors chanted different slogans on the streets demanding justiceand booking the culprit. President of All Manipur Students Union (AMSU), Peter Laishram told media that every parents enrolled their children in boarding school thinking it is safe for their children but recent untoward incidents taking place in different boarding school in the state prove otherwise.

The student leader alleged that the fact that the school authorities failed to make any sort clarification on the mysterious death case till date proves beyond any doubt that Ningthoujam Babesana case was not a suicide but a conspired murder. He also lambasted the state administration for not being pro-active in investigation and booking the culprits.

While rejecting the theory that it was a suicide case, Peter argued why the other 36 students who were staying in the dormitory where Babesana was found death were silent claiming they didn’t notice anything suspicious. This, the student leader clearly indicates that the school authorities maybe trying to hide some facts into the death.

Further the student leader said, AMSU will launch a series of intense agitation till the culprits are booked and punished according to law and the state come out with stringent rules and regulation for running and managing boarding schools in the state.
