Silchar: The Cachar district unit of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) organised a meeting on Tuesday afternoon to congratulate NDA-supported winning candidates in the recently concluded Assam assembly elections, while also reviewing the party’s performance in the district, particularly the outcome in the Sonai constituency.
The meeting was held at the party’s district office on Trunk Road in Silchar and saw the presence of key district leaders, office bearers, and members from various frontal organisations. The gathering served both as a thanksgiving event and a platform to assess the party’s electoral performance and future course of action.
Addressing the meeting, AGP Cachar district president Nazmul Hussain Mazumdar stated that 10 AGP candidates supported by the NDA have secured victory across Assam. He said the results reflect a significant improvement compared to previous elections, attributing the success to growing public confidence in the party and the alliance. Mazumdar extended his congratulations to all winning candidates and expressed gratitude to party workers, supporters, and voters for their role in achieving the outcome.
At the same time, he described the defeat of Karim Uddin Barbhuiya, the lone AGP candidate from Cachar who contested from the Sonai constituency, as disappointing. Raising serious allegations, Mazumdar claimed that the Congress candidate in Sonai resorted to religious polarisation and intimidation tactics targeting AGP supporters and voters. He argued that such practices undermine the spirit of free and fair elections and added that the result should not be considered a true reflection of public mandate.

AGP working president Moniton Singh also spoke on the occasion, congratulating all NDA-backed winners from Cachar district. He echoed concerns over the Sonai result and emphasised the need for introspection and organisational strengthening. Singh called upon party members to intensify their efforts from the grassroots level and remain actively engaged with the public to rebuild momentum in the district.
The meeting was attended by several senior and local leaders, including district secretary Sujit Sharma, Riazul Haque Barbhuiya, Youth Parishad central secretary Nekbub Hussain Laskar, Cachar district Youth Parishad president Rupam Modak, Silchar constituency president Dipon Bhattacharjee, Pradip Sinha, Ayaz Uddin Barbhuiya (Manna), Kajal Laskar, Khaled Masud Mazumdar, Sajal Choudhury, Ajay Nandi, and Hayat Hussain Mazumdar, among others.
During the discussion, leaders exchanged views on strengthening the party’s organisational structure, expanding outreach programmes, and improving coordination among different wings of the party. Emphasis was laid on increasing engagement at the grassroots level, addressing local issues more effectively, and preparing a stronger base for future political challenges.
