Silchar: The Regional Laboratory and Office of the Assam Pollution Control Board (APCB), Silchar, celebrated the Foundation Day of the Board along with an Environmental Awareness Programme at the Conference Hall of Gurucharan University on Tuesday.
The event was organized in collaboration with the Department of Ecology and Environmental Science of Gurucharan University, Silchar Municipal Corporation, and ToWaSo Private Limited.
The programme brought together officials of the Assam Pollution Control Board, representatives of partner organizations, faculty members, and students to discuss environmental conservation and sustainable development. As part of the celebrations, a tree plantation drive was conducted on the university campus to promote environmental stewardship and sustainability.
The event commenced with a welcome address by Nazmin Sultana Laskar, Project Associate of ToWaSo Private Limited, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by distinguished guests.
Speaking on the occasion, Arvind Das highlighted the significance of the Assam Pollution Control Board’s Foundation Day and stressed the importance of raising environmental awareness among citizens.
Vice-Chancellor of Gurucharan University, Dr. Niranjan Roy, underscored the role of educational institutions in fostering environmental consciousness and sustainable living practices. He also emphasized the importance of the Assam Pollution Control Board as a key advisory body to the government on environmental issues.
A technical session on “Waste Management” was conducted by Soni Kumari, Industry Expert from ToWaSo Private Limited, who discussed various aspects of scientific waste management and sustainable practices.
Addressing the gathering, Nabottam Sharma, AUS, Executive Officer of Silchar Municipal Corporation, outlined the Corporation’s plans for implementing the proposed Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2026. He encouraged students to actively participate in environmental management initiatives and adopt eco-friendly habits in their daily lives. He also urged them to become ambassadors of environmental awareness within their communities.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Monpriya Dev, Scientific Assistant at the Regional Laboratory and Office of APCB, Silchar. The event ended with closing remarks and refreshments.
