Guwahati | Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday announced the release of the first instalment of interim financial assistance for families affected by the recent floods, with the state government sanctioning Rs 112 crore to support relief and rehabilitation efforts in the worst-hit districts of Upper Assam.

Under the package, each eligible flood-affected household will receive Rs 15,000 as interim relief. The first phase of disbursement is expected to benefit more than 60,000 families across four severely impacted districts, while the total number of beneficiaries is likely to increase to around 75,000 as damage assessments continue.

Addressing the media, Sarma said over 35,000 families in Sivasagar, more than 19,000 in Charaideo, over 4,000 in Jorhat and more than 2,000 families in Golaghat have been identified for the initial round of assistance.

He said the government is continuing ground-level verification in flood-affected areas and additional households will be included if found eligible during the assessment process.

The chief minister also announced further financial support for displaced families in Sivasagar and Charaideo who remain unable to return to their homes due to extensive flood damage.

According to Sarma, families in these two districts who are still living in relief camps or temporary shelters and are unable to return home by August 9 will receive an additional assistance of Rs 10,000 from August 10.

The supplementary relief is intended to help households whose homes have been damaged or rendered uninhabitable by the floods and who continue to face displacement.

Sarma further said that a comprehensive field survey to assess flood-related losses to houses, agriculture, livestock and other assets in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat will begin on August 10.

Based on the findings of the assessment, compensation and other financial assistance will be released to eligible families in accordance with government norms, he added.

In a separate announcement, the chief minister said the Assam government has also released its share of the subsidy under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, enabling beneficiaries to install rooftop solar systems and reduce household electricity expenses.

The relief measures come as the state government intensifies rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts following one of the most damaging flood spells in recent years, which caused widespread destruction of homes, agricultural land, livestock and public infrastructure across several districts of Upper Assam.
