Silchar: Assam University, Silchar, opened a six-day capacity building programme for its non-teaching staff on Monday with tributes to Bir Lachit Barphukan on his 403rd birth anniversary and to tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda, whose 150th birth anniversary was observed on 15 November.

The short-term training, themed Institutional Efficiency and Inclusive Service Delivery, is being conducted by the UGC-Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Centre (MMTTC). The initiative aims to strengthen administrative systems and promote a more inclusive campus environment.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Rajive Mohan Pant led the inaugural session, joined by MMTTC Director Prof. R. Balakrishnan, Prof. Ajay Kumar Singh, Prof. Sudipto Roy, Dr. C. Khobragade, and representatives of the non-teaching staff association, including AUNTEA president Sagnik Choudhary and Manoj K. De. The Vice-Chancellor also released the study material prepared for the participants.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Pant underlined the importance of non-teaching personnel in the daily functioning of the university. Here’s what he stressed: academic activity depends on an efficient administrative structure, and the training aims to equip staff with the skills needed to meet evolving institutional demands.

The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Uday Shankar Chatterjee from the Institute of Secretarial Training and Management under the Department of Personnel and Training, New Delhi. He discussed the link between effective administrative services and the quality of higher education.

Prof. Balakrishnan outlined the programme’s design, noting that the six-day schedule includes lectures, workshops, and interactive sessions handled by senior academicians, administrators, and experts from institutions such as IIM.

Programme Coordinator Dr. Pulak Dhar explained that the training expects participants to develop a stronger understanding of institutional procedures, improve service delivery, and adopt digital tools to streamline administrative workflows. The programme also aims to build confidence among staff to handle varied and complex challenges on campus.

The sessions will run throughout the week at the university’s MMTTC centre.
