Barak Valley | District level capacity building workshop on climate action held in Cachar

As part of their capacity-building effort, the society is organizing a series of awareness-cum-capacity building workshops on climate change across all the districts of Assam

A day-long Capacity-building workshop on Climate Action for Cachar District was organized by the Assam Climate Change Management Society (ACCMS), Government of Assam in collaboration with the District Disaster Management Authority, Cachar and Sustainable Knowledge and Climate Action Group at the auditorium of BoscoTech,  on Monday at Silchar Assam. 

The workshop was inaugurated by the C.EO, District Disaster Management, Cachar Yuvaraj Borthakur, and Divisional Forest Officer, Cachar division, Tejas Mariswamy. 

Speaking on the occasion, Borthakur said that humankind is responsible for the issue of climatical changes and embracing, preserving, and conserving nature is the only way forward. 

Citing the example of Ahmedabad, Borthakur highlighted the importance of taking up plantations specifically in urban areas like Silchar. Borthakur also appealed to all to use minimum electric power. 

Earlier, speaking at the event, Divisional Forest Officer, Cachar, Tejas Mariswamy reiterated the urgency of taking up initiating climate actions as the state of Assam is already witnessing a lot of extreme weather events which are expected to get more frequent and more intense. 

“Climate change is on and it’s real. If we need to combat the issue of climate change, all the departments have to come together and take collective actions,” added DFO Mariswamy.

Rizwan Uz Zaman, Technical Consultant, ACCMS explained the role and responsibilities of Assam Climate Change Society and the revised State Action Plan on Climate Change.

A.R. Ahmed, District Agriculture Officer, Cachar District also spoke on this occasion.

In the technical session, Dr. Panna Chandra Nath, Research Associate, Department of Ecology & Environmental Science, Assam University presented on the Science of Climate Change: Causes, Consequences, Indicators and its impacts in Water, Agriculture sectors in the context of Silchar.

Annie George, Technical Consultant, UNICEF spoke on Disaster Risk Reduction in the context of Climate Change, highlighting the importance of reducing the development gap and increasing the economical capacities in building the climate resilience of the community.

Jaheer Iqbal Laskar, Research scholar, NIT Silchar presented on Climate Risk Resilience on Infrastructural Assets, and Rizwan Uz Zaman, Technical Consultant made a presentation on Climate Change Vulnerability and Planning for Mitigation, Adaptation, and Resilience.

Later, the district officials took part in group activities and through discussions identified the vulnerable areas. The participants also brainstormed to plan and mainstream climate actions into departmental policies. 

The Assam Climate Change Management Society is a special-purpose establishment created by the Government of Assam and is chaired by the Chief Minister of Assam. The main objective of this society is to implement the state action plan on climate change in coordination with all the line departments of the state. As part of their capacity-building effort, the society is organizing a series of awareness-cum-capacity building workshops on climate change across all the districts of Assam.
