Guwahati: Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday hit out at the Congress during an exclusive interaction with India Today NE, urging the party not to drag popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg into political narratives amid the ongoing election campaign.

Speaking during a packed campaign schedule ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, Sarma said that cultural icons like Zubeen Garg should be kept above politics and not used for electoral gains.

The Chief Minister also reiterated his government’s firm stance on the issue of illegal immigration, asserting that strict action against illegal foreigners will continue without compromise. He emphasized that safeguarding the state’s demographic and cultural identity remains a top priority for his administration.

Sarma’s remarks come at a time when political exchanges between the BJP and Congress have intensified across the state, with both sides stepping up their campaigns ahead of polling.

The interview offers key insights into the BJP’s campaign strategy and the Chief Minister’s position on sensitive socio-political issues shaping the electoral discourse in Assam.
