Silchar: In a major relief after hours of tension along the Indo-Bangladesh border, a 60-year-old Indian farmer, Ranjit Das, was safely handed over to Indian authorities on Tuesday following nearly eight hours of negotiations between officials of the two countries.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. when Das was allegedly abducted by six Bangladeshi miscreants while working on agricultural land near the Surma River in the no-man’s land area along the international border.
The incident triggered concern among residents in the border region and prompted immediate action by the border guarding forces. Initial flag meetings between the security agencies of the two countries reportedly failed to secure Das’s release, leading to the matter being escalated to higher administrative authorities.
Following the intervention of senior officials from both India and Bangladesh, discussions intensified and efforts were made to ensure the farmer’s safe return. Subsequently, Bangladeshi authorities facilitated his repatriation, and he was handed over to Indian officials in good health.
The successful resolution of the situation brought relief to Das’s family and eased tensions among residents living in the border areas, who had been closely monitoring developments throughout the day.
Officials described the coordinated response and diplomatic engagement between the two sides as crucial in securing the farmer’s safe return and preventing further escalation of the situation.
