Guwahati: A disclosure in the latest election affidavit of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has drawn attention to a long-standing personal loan that has remained unchanged across multiple election cycles.
According to the affidavit filed before the Election Commission of India on March 20, 2026, Sarma continues to show a liability of Rs 2 lakh owed to his childhood friend Devajit Saikia, who currently serves as the Advocate General of Assam and is also associated with the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
Notably, the same loan amount had been declared in his previous affidavits submitted during the 2021 and 2016 Assembly elections, indicating that the liability has remained consistent over the years.
The affidavit also reveals that Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, has a separate outstanding loan of Rs 1 lakh from Saikia. This liability, too, has been consistently reflected in disclosures across successive election filings.
Election affidavits, which are mandatory for candidates, provide a detailed account of assets and liabilities and are aimed at ensuring transparency in public life.
