Silchar: The District Commissioner’s office in Cachar witnessed an overwhelming turnout of candidates and their supporters on Monday as the nomination process for the 2026 Assam Assembly Elections gathered momentum. The premises turned into a hub of political activity, with supporters raising slogans and cheering for their respective candidates, creating a charged and festive atmosphere.

From early morning, groups of party workers and supporters began assembling near the DC office, waving flags and chanting slogans in favour of their candidates. The heavy footfall led to congestion in and around the office space, as multiple candidates arrived to file their nomination papers.

Among the prominent candidates who filed nominations were Congress candidate from Sonai, Aminul Haque Laskar; BJP candidate from Silchar, Dr. Rajdeep Roy; Congress candidate from Lakhipur, Dr. Shanti Kumar Singh; and Congress candidate from Katigorah, Amar Chand Jain. Each of them expressed confidence in securing victory in their respective constituencies.

Speaking to reporters, the candidates highlighted their vision for development and outlined key priorities for their constituencies. They promised to focus on infrastructure, public welfare, and overall growth if elected. At the same time, they launched sharp attacks on their political opponents, accusing them of failing to deliver on promises and neglecting public issues.

The atmosphere reflected the beginning of an intense electoral battle, with parties trying to mobilise support and make early impressions on voters. Supporters continued to echo slogans, turning the administrative circle into a politically vibrant space.

Meanwhile, sitting Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty, who was denied a party ticket this time, struck a balanced and disciplined tone. Addressing mediapersons, he urged party workers and supporters to unite and work towards ensuring the victory of BJP candidate Dr. Rajdeep Roy.

Chakraborty said that personal aspirations should take a backseat in the larger interest of the party. He appealed to voters to support the Bharatiya Janata Party under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, stressing that their leadership has been instrumental in driving development across the state.

As the nomination phase progresses, political activities across Cachar district have intensified significantly. The large turnout and high energy at the DC office indicate that the poll battle has effectively begun, with parties gearing up for a closely contested fight in the Barak Valley region.

With campaigning expected to pick up pace in the coming days, all eyes are now on how candidates connect with voters and shape the narrative ahead of polling.
