Kohima : Conrad K Sangma, chief of the National People’s Party (NPP), on Wednesday pitched for youth empowerment and renewed calls for repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) while campaigning for the upcoming Nagaland bypoll.

Addressing a public rally in Longkhum village in Mokokchung district in support of NPP candidate I. Abenjang for the Koridang by-election scheduled on April 9, Sangma urged political leaders, civil society organisations and religious bodies to work together to create meaningful opportunities for the youth of the Northeast.

Highlighting the region’s demographic profile, Sangma noted that more than 60 per cent of Nagaland’s population is under the age of 30, describing it as a significant but underutilised strength. Quoting him, NPP national secretary Saidul Khan said the party’s objective is to bring together the people of the Northeast and promote collective development.

Sangma expressed confidence in the party’s candidate, stating that Abenjang would serve the people with dedication if elected. The bypoll, necessitated by a vacancy, is being closely watched for its potential to signal shifts in political alignments in the state.

Interacting with reporters, Sangma reiterated the NPP’s independent political stance, asserting that the party is focused on long-term regional development rather than short-term electoral gains.

Security issues also figured prominently in his address, with the Meghalaya Chief Minister calling for the repeal of AFSPA. He argued that existing legal frameworks are sufficient to maintain law and order, echoing long-standing demands across parts of the Northeast amid ongoing peace processes.

During his visit, Sangma also paid tribute to Naga nationalist Imkongmeren Ao, blending political outreach with cultural engagement. He was accorded a traditional Ao welcome and interacted with village elders and local council representatives before addressing the rally.
