Nagaland: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former Bihar Assembly Speaker Nand Kishore Yadav has been appointed as the new Governor of Nagaland. The appointment was made by President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday, March 5, 2026.
Yadav’s appointment comes after his tenure as the Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly, a position he had been holding since February 2024.
Born on August 26, 1953, in the Khajekalan area of Old Patna in Bihar, Yadav is the son of businessman Panna Lal Yadav and Raj Kumari Yadav. His great grandfather, Jhalo Sardar, was known as a prominent landlord in the region.
He completed his matriculation in 1969 from State Marwari High School in Patna. Later, he enrolled in the College of Commerce under Magadh University to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree. However, in 1974, during the final year of his graduation, he left his studies to take part in the ‘total revolution’ movement led by Jayaprakash Narayan.
Yadav became associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in 1969 and soon became active in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad in 1971.
He entered public life through local politics, beginning his career as a councillor in the Patna Municipal Corporation in 1978. In 1982, he was elected Deputy Mayor of Patna.
A veteran BJP leader in Bihar, Yadav served as the president of the party’s state unit from 1998 to 2003. He has been elected to the Bihar Legislative Assembly seven times since 1995, representing the Patna East constituency, which was later renamed Patna Sahib.
Over the years, he has held several important portfolios in the Bihar government. These include Road Construction, Health and Family Welfare, and Tourism under various governments led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
Yadav also served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Legislative Assembly from 2013 to 2015. With his appointment as the Governor of Nagaland, Yadav moves from state politics in Bihar to a constitutional role in the northeastern state.
