Questions Centre Over Delay in Restoring Peace

Guwahati : The North East Students’ Organization (NESO) on Tuesday voiced deep concern over the continuing violence in Manipur, describing the situation as a grave humanitarian crisis and questioning the failure of both State and Central authorities to restore normalcy.
In a statement, the student body stressed that repeated attacks on unarmed civilians constitute a serious violation of human dignity and security, and called for immediate accountability. It urged authorities to identify and prosecute those responsible for such “heinous acts” in accordance with the law to rebuild public confidence.
NESO, a conglomerate of eight major student organisations across the Northeast-including the All Assam Students’ Union, Khasi Students’ Union, Garo Students’ Union, All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union, Naga Students’ Federation, All Manipur Students’ Union, Mizo Zirlai Pawl and Twipra Students’ Federation-said it is “deeply disturbed” by the recurring incidents of violence that continue to claim innocent lives and erode the fabric of peaceful coexistence in the state.

“The prolonged unrest has inflicted immeasurable suffering on families and communities, leaving behind grief, fear and uncertainty,” NESO chairman Samuel B. Jyrwa said, extending condolences to the bereaved families and expressing solidarity with those affected.
The organisation raised serious concerns over what it termed the inability of the State and Central governments to effectively intervene and bring the protracted crisis to an end. It described the continued failure to restore peace as a “deeply concerning lapse in governance and responsibility.”
Appealing for restraint, NESO called upon all communities and stakeholders to uphold the values of humanity and pursue dialogue over violence. It emphasised that lasting peace can only be achieved through mutual respect and constructive engagement addressing the root causes of the conflict.
Recalling its earlier initiatives, the organisation said it had undertaken peace missions in the past, along with its constituent units, to promote understanding and facilitate dialogue among different groups. It reaffirmed its commitment to continue such efforts in the interest of regional harmony and stability.
“Restoration of peace in Manipur is not only a regional necessity but a moral imperative,” Jyrwa added, urging authorities to act with urgency, sincerity and accountability.
