Silchar: As heavy rainfall continues across southern Assam, the problem of waterlogging in Silchar has once again intensified, exposing long-standing concerns over poor urban planning and delayed infrastructure development.

Residents from several parts of the town said that the water levels in Rangirkhal and Longaikhal are steadily rising due to continuous rainfall, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying areas. The situation has become particularly difficult near National Highway points in the town, where traffic congestion and heavy passenger movement are already common. Waterlogged roads have further disrupted transportation and daily life.

Although the local administration has begun canal-cleaning operations in an attempt to improve drainage, many residents claimed that the efforts have shown little immediate impact because of the ongoing heavy rain. Locals alleged that several development projects in the town suffer from weak planning, poor coordination, and delays in execution.

According to residents, irregularities and negligence in implementation have prevented many drainage and infrastructure works from being completed on time and with proper quality standards. They fear that unless long-term measures are taken, the waterlogging problem will continue to return every monsoon season.

The issue has also triggered political debate. Some citizens alleged that repeated compromises between the ruling party and opposition leaders over development issues have weakened efforts to push for permanent solutions. However, a section of opposition leaders rejected the criticism, stating that they are now prioritizing support for development initiatives rather than engaging in confrontation politics.

Local observers pointed out that development should not remain limited to electoral promises, but must focus on building durable infrastructure for future generations.

Many residents expressed concern that without organized public pressure and stronger civic engagement, Silchar may continue to face recurring monsoon-related hardships in the years ahead.
