Dr Rajendra A Badwe, Director of Tata Memorial Center, Mumbai addressed the faculty members, departmental heads, post-graduate students and fellows during Fellowship/Certificate Completion Ceremony of Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI), Guwahati held via video conferencing on 29th June 2020. 

Five doctors from Nagaland, two from Assam, and one each from Manipur and Meghalaya completed two years post-graduate fellowship program in various disciplines of oncology. The fellowship program is jointly conducted by BBCI and Tata Memorial Center, Mumbai. Two doctors from Nagaland and one from Jharkhand completed one-year Certificate Course in Palliative Medicine.

All the passed out fellows and trainees from the institute will be mentored by the faculty of BBCI for continuing medical education and case-based discussion regularly to help in making better clinical decisions and knowledge enrichment further informed Dr Kataki.

Dr Badwe spoke about the high incidence of esophageal, gallbladder, stomach, and nasopharyngeal cancers in the North Eastern (NE) region in addition to common cancers like oral, breast, and cervical cancers. These cancers constitute almost 80 % of all cancers seen in patient from the NE region. The objective of the fellowship program is to train doctors in various disciplines so that 80% of cancer patients can be treated at peripheral centers, and thereby reducing the load of cancer patients in tertiary cancer centers, which is mandated to treat complicated cancer patients that cannot be managed in peripheral centers. Dr Badwe also stressed upon the availability of Palliative Care Services in the doorstep.

Dr Debabrata Barman, Deputy Director (Academics), BBCI gave an overview of academic programs ongoing at the institute. Dr Sarbani Ghosh Laskar, Professor of Radiation Oncology at Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai and Dr Tashnin Rahman, Professor and Head of Head and Neck Surgery, BBCI also spoke on the occasion.
