Says CM Manik Saha at Padmajang Football Final

Tripura: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Tuesday said the state has seen a major change in sports over the past few years. He said Tripura was once seen as backward in sports. But now the situation has improved a lot after the present government took charge.

Speaking at the final of the revived Padmajang Football Competition, the Chief Minister said the return of the tournament after many years is a proud moment for the state.

He praised Sports Minister Tinku Roy for bringing back the event. He said the competition holds strong memories for the people and its revival has created fresh energy in the sports circle. Teams from almost all Northeastern states took part in the tournament.

The Chief Minister said football is one of the most loved games and gives thrill in a short time. He added that several synthetic football turfs have been built across Tripura. The government is also working to improve sports infrastructure further.

During the programme held at half time, Sports Minister Tinku Roy said the government wants to support young talents through sports. He said proper infrastructure has helped create a better environment for sports in the state.

Many dignitaries attended the final match, including Minister Sudhangshu Das, Zilla Parishad leaders Amalendu Das and Aparna Nath, District Magistrate Dr Tamal Majumdar, Superintendent of Police Sudambika R and Tripura Football Association Secretary Amit Chowdhury.

In the final, Rengdai FC defeated TRAU FC 5 to 4 in a tie breaker to win the title. Chief Minister Manik Saha handed over a cheque of Rs 5 lakh and the trophy to the winners. Sports Minister Tinku Roy presented Rs 3 lakh and a trophy to the runners up.

The tournament began on January 31 and saw 16 teams from Tripura, other Northeastern states, Sikkim and West Bengal take part.
