GUWAHATI | The Centre has approved 3.8 lakh new houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) for Assam, involving an investment of nearly Rs 5,000 crore, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday. Sarma met Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who formally handed over the approval documents for the housing projects.

The Union minister also assured the Chief Minister of additional assistance under PMAY for families whose homes were damaged or destroyed in the recent floods, allowing them to rebuild at the earliest. “Deeply grateful to Hon’ble Union Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan Ji for the priority and support he continues to extend to Assam,” Sarma said in a post on X.

According to the Chief Minister, the Centre has approved 3.8 lakh new houses under PMAY with an investment of close to Rs 5,000 crore. Additional support will also be extended for housing development in Assam’s tea garden areas. The announcement comes as the State continues its recovery from the recent floods, which caused extensive damage to homes and infrastructure across several districts.

Sarma said the additional housing assistance would help flood-affected families rebuild their homes and resume normal lives. During the meeting, the Chief Minister also received a sanction letter for Rs 139 crore under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY).

The funds are aimed at strengthening agricultural investment and promoting sustainable farming practices in Assam. Sarma thanked Chouhan for what he described as prompt decisions and continued support to the State, particularly during the recent floods. The latest housing approval is expected to provide a major boost to Assam’s rural housing programme while supporting reconstruction efforts in flood-affected areas. With additional assistance planned for tea garden communities, the initiative is also likely to benefit sections of the population living in some of the State’s economically vulnerable areas.
