KRC TIMES Assam Bureau

Guwahati: Assam is set to witness a major infrastructure milestone with the construction of India’s first underwater road-cum-rail tunnel beneath the Brahmaputra River. The 15.79-km tunnel will be among the world’s most advanced transport projects and is expected to transform connectivity across Northeast India.

The tunnel will link Gohpur and Numaligarh, reducing the current travel time from nearly six hours to just 20 minutes. The project is expected to provide a faster, safer and more reliable transport route for both passengers and goods.

Once completed, the tunnel will significantly improve regional connectivity, boost trade and commerce, strengthen tourism and support economic growth across the Northeast. The project is also expected to enhance strategic mobility while bringing remote areas closer to major transport networks.

The ambitious initiative marks a significant step in India’s efforts to develop world-class infrastructure and accelerate the development of the Northeast region.
