Guwahati: Senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia has conceded defeat in the Nazira constituency, congratulating BJP candidate Mayur Borgohain on his victory.

Saikia, who served as Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, said he respects the mandate of the people and will continue to remain connected to the constituency regardless of electoral outcomes.

His defeat is being seen as one of the most significant outcomes of the Assam Assembly elections. As a long-standing face of the Congress in the Assembly, Saikia’s loss is expected to weaken the party’s presence inside the House.

The result also raises fresh questions about the future course of the Indian National Congress in Assam, where it has struggled to regain ground against the Bharatiya Janata Party in recent years.
