Manipuri Documentary ‘Battlefield’ Nominated for Screening at Prestigious Mumbai International Film Festival 2026

Manipur: Manipur’s acclaimed documentary film Battlefield has earned a significant international recognition after being nominated for screening in the International Competition section of the 19th Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) 2026, one of the world’s leading festivals dedicated to non-feature films.

The festival is scheduled to be held in Mumbai from June 15 to 21, 2026. Directed by Borun Thokchom, Battlefield will compete in the feature-length documentary category alongside entries from across the globe.

The nomination comes on the heels of the film’s successful world premiere at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), further strengthening its presence on the international documentary circuit.

Produced by Manjoy Lourembam, Dr. Radhesyam Oinam and Viswamithra Universals, the documentary’s selection marks a major achievement for Manipuri cinema and highlights the growing recognition of filmmakers from the Northeast on global platforms.

Expressing his happiness over the achievement, director Borun Thokchom said the nomination is a proud moment not only for the film but also for the state of Manipur and its film fraternity.

Established in 1990 and held biennially, the Mumbai International Film Festival is South Asia’s oldest and largest festival dedicated to non-feature films. Organised by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, MIFF has evolved into a premier global platform for documentary, short fiction and animation films.

The 19th edition of MIFF will feature opening and closing ceremonies, international and Indian competitions, the prestigious Golden and Silver Conch Awards, and cash prizes worth Rs.55 lakh. The festival will also host gala screenings, red carpet events, masterclasses, panel discussions and the Waves Doc Bazaar.

According to festival officials, MIFF 2026 received a record-breaking 1,459 entries from 47 countries. The official final shortlist is expected to be published closer to the festival’s opening in mid-June.

The nomination of Battlefield underscores the growing stature of Manipuri cinema and offers another opportunity for the state’s filmmakers to showcase their work before an international audience.
