Shillong: Mukul Sangma on Saturday urged the state government to set up an independent commission of inquiry into the recent violence in the Garo Hills, raising concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation linked to developments surrounding the GHADC elections.
In a petition submitted to Governor C H Vijayashankar, Sangma stated that the unrest, which turned violent on March 10 and claimed two lives, was worsened by the lack of timely intervention by the government. He also indicated the possible involvement of vested interests behind the clashes.
The Leader of Opposition further expressed concern over alleged indiscriminate arrests in the aftermath of the violence. He warned that such actions could lead to miscarriage of justice and erode public trust in law enforcement, stressing the need for evidence-based policing.
Sangma emphasised that the proposed inquiry should thoroughly examine the causes of the violence, fix accountability, and ensure due process. He also called for continued dialogue among all stakeholders to help restore peace and stability in the region.
