Primates living in quite large numbers in the proximity of Mondop Lanka – Umrangso Road leading to Dima Hasao district are facing severe hazards as they struggle for fodder and water.

Forest department under the administrative control of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council has not initiated any step to save this wildlife.

Primate and other mammalian species are facing impossible odds for their survival, the monkey habitat of that forest patch is decreasing at rapid pace. The road leading Lanka to Umrangso via Mondop has fragmented the forest patch.

Allegedly the fragmentation of the forested areas took place as the control of that road was taken forcibly without the concurrence of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

The road kills the primates involving trucks and other speeding vehicles, and incidents are increasing day by day. Despite the killing spree, the forest department is yet to take any significant initiative to protect them.

The access to resources to food, water and cover of the primates are under tremendous pressure due to developmental works.

The monkeys’ plight is exacerbated by the lack of access to food and water sources in their habitat. They heavily rely on scraps from passing vehicles or the generosity of travelers who occasionally provide biscuits or bananas to lessen the hunger of the famished creature.

However, this makeshift solution is not sustainable, and the monkeys continue to face danger from speeding vehicles during their quest for food along the roadside. Without proper intervention of the Forest department and other allied organizations the fatalities for monkeys remains high.

Local residents and wildlife enthusiasts are calling for immediate action from the forest department to address the plight of these monkeys.

Measures such as installing warning signs, designated feeding areas, or implementing speed limits could help mitigate the risks and ensure the safety of both wildlife and commuters and declare such specific area as Monkey habitat / Accident Prone Areas .
