Imphal : Fresh violence erupted in Manipur’s Mongkot Chepu village on Tuesday morning, less than 24 hours after an earlier militant attack left two farmers injured, raising fresh concerns over the deteriorating security situation in the region.
According to residents, heavily armed militants launched a coordinated assault around 7:30 am from the Litan-Sareikhong axis. The attackers reportedly used mortars and automatic rifles, suggesting a high degree of planning and access to sophisticated weaponry.
At least one villager sustained injuries after being hit by splinters from a mortar shell, underscoring the intensity of the attack. The sudden escalation triggered panic among residents, with many scrambling to take shelter.
The violence also disrupted normal life, with schoolchildren among those affected as gunfire and explosions were reported near educational institutions. Visuals circulating on social media showed students taking cover inside classrooms, crouching on the floor as a precaution amid the ongoing firing.
Eyewitness accounts and video footage from the nearby Litan area have further heightened concerns. Locals claimed that gunshots were heard from areas in close proximity to the Litan Police Station, raising questions about security preparedness.
The footage captures the sound of automatic gunfire in the vicinity, prompting scrutiny over how such activity could take place near a security installation.
Residents alleged that the firing was directed towards Kuki-inhabited areas, forcing people to remain indoors amid fears of further escalation. The latest incident has intensified anxiety among locals and renewed focus on the effectiveness of security arrangements in the conflict-hit region.
