Silchar: The Assam State Election Commission has officially initiated preparations for the forthcoming Silchar Municipal Corporation election by announcing the schedule for the preparation, revision, and publication of electoral rolls for all 42 wards of the Corporation.

According to a notification issued by State Election Commissioner Ranjan Sharma, the electoral roll revision process will be conducted based on the Assembly Electoral Roll in force with January 1, 2026, as the qualifying date.

The Silchar Municipal Corporation was constituted by the Governor of Assam under the provisions of the Assam Municipal Corporation Act, 2022, through a Gazette Notification issued on November 28, 2024. The Corporation comprises 42 wards.

As per the schedule, preliminary work for the preparation of electoral rolls will be carried out from June 12 to June 18, 2026. The preparation and updation of electoral rolls will take place from June 19 to June 28. Draft electoral rolls will be published on June 29, while July 6 has been fixed as the last date for filing claims and objections.

The last date for disposal of claims and objections has been set for July 13, and the final electoral rolls will be published on July 15, 2026.

The Commission stated that the entire process of preparation, updation, and publication of electoral rolls will be conducted in accordance with Rules 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 of the Assam Municipal Corporation Election Rules, 2022.

Meanwhile, Registration Officers for the respective wards of the Silchar Municipal Corporation have already been appointed through a separate notification issued on June 8, 2026.

The announcement marks a significant step towards the conduct of the first election to the newly constituted Silchar Municipal Corporation.
